Most of all, forgettable funk. Prince's mistake may have been to rely heavily on guest performers. Three of the weakest songs among the record's 17 cuts were performed by The Time; another features singer Mavis Staples, who sounds good but gets stuck with a numbing tune. "Music From Graffiti Bridge" is to accompany Prince's upcoming new movie, and the guest performances make it sound like a tepid soundtrack album. Prince saves his best compositions to sing himself, and there are a few gems down the stretch the Broadway-tinged "Graffiti Bridge," the steamy "Joy in Repetition" and the psychedelica-gospel hybrid "Still Would Stand All Time." A parental advisory sticker adorns the cover, but most of the sexual references are pretty lame and tame by Prince's standards.
He's actually more interesting when he turns pious on a couple of cuts. Prince fares best when he's taking chances by testing different genres. Safe in his funk rut, he's duller than a bass drum track. By Steven Wine, Associated Press Writer.
