Blake Sanders crowned King of Bridge by Sue Munday

In a year when the under-40 set is making its mark on the game, another talented young player, Blake Sanders, has been named ACBL’s 2011 King of Bridge. The 18-year old Jonesboro AR resident will receive a $1000 scholarship from the ACBL Educational Foundation in addition to seeing his name added to a roster of bridge kings who have gone on to achieve success at the highest levels of national and international play. Sanders feels both humbled and motivated to be following in the footsteps of superstars such as Bobby Levin, Jeff Meckstroth, Steve Weinstein, Brad Moss, Eric Greco and Joel Wooldridge. With many others in the world of bridge, Sanders is

cheering as a seriously good, younger generation of players seizes national titles and trophies that were once the province of more seasoned, famous names. Following wins in prestigious pairs events at the Spring NABCs — the Platinum Pairs, the Silodor Open Pairs and the top two spots in the North American Pairs — six young guns topped that performance when they won the USA 2 spot on the Bermuda-Bowl-bound team. This is the youngest U.S. squad ever to represent the country in international play. “It’s awesome!” he exclaims. “Those guys have to be pretty good to be beating the best players in the world. My ultimate goal is to be able to talk to them, play with them and learn from them.” Sanders earned his gold card in more than a year. He is a frequent face at the Jonesboro Bridge Studio, his local club. At the International Fund Game in May, Sanders and his partner, stepfather Russ Jones, scored a whopping 84.48% game to win the event. “Sometimes everything is just right,” Sanders says somewhat sheepishly. They followed that up with a 79.81% game two weeks later. “I like to play a variation of the Italian Blue Team club system,” he says, which he describes as a simpler form of Precision. Sanders plays on Bridge Base Online (BBO) — socially and when practicing for tournaments. He and his Floridabased partner Asya Ladyzhensky competed recently in the Under 21 Youth Team trials hosted by the United States Bridge Federation via BBO, but failed to qualify. “We had a bad final session or we might have earned a berth on the team,” he says. “Maybe it’s just as well. Collegiate semi matchups: Brandeis - UNC, Penn - Berkeley Of the nine college squads that qualified to participate in yesterday’s Collegiate Team Championship in Toronto, four advanced to toady’s semifinal round: Brandeis University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Pennsylvania (#2) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At the end of yesterday’s round-robin qualifying, Brandeis finished at the top of the field

with 116 Victory Points. Their lineup includes Adam Grossack, James Hickey, Hang Yang and Zhihao Liu. Second, with 109 VPs, was Berkeley; their lineup is Edmund Wu, Frank Lin, Antony Lee and Eric Chan. In third with 102 was Penn. Playing for Penn are Zhuo Wang, Xi Chen, Naiji Guo and Kendrick Chow. Defenders out in top GNT flight The District 9 team captained by Warren Spector broke open a close match in the third quarter against the defending champions from District 11 and went on to win 174-105 to advance to the final of the Grand National Teams Championship Flight. Spector will face Steve Robinson (District 6), in today’s championship round. Spector (Mike Becker, David Berkowitz, Gary Cohler, Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell) trailed by 2 IMPs at the half against Doug Simson (Walter Johnson, Jerry and Dennis Clerkin) but took the third quarter 47-9 and the fourth 54-21 to win going away. Their margin is less than one-third of a board. They start play with a carryover score of 75.51, about 10 matchpoints ahead of second with a projected top of 38. It’s All In Your Head Hands That Don’t Make the Text Books

If you are a habitually slow player, be aware that the ACBL Board of Directors unanimously approved this motion at the Fall NABC in 2010: When a pair has fallen behind, it is incumbent on them to make up the time lost as quickly as possible whether at fault or not. All players are expected to make a concerted effort to catch up when they have fallen behind, regardless of the reason for their lateness. In the absence of compelling evidence to the contrary, the director should presume that a pair finishing a round late by more than two or three minutes on more than one occasion during a session is responsible for the lateness. There is a strong expectation that the director will penalize such a pair. The size of a penalty will tend to increase for subsequent instances of slow play and for chronic or egregious slow play. While warnings typically will be given before a penalty is assessed, failure to do so in no way limits the director’s authority to issue a penalty. An appeal of an action taken by a TD with regard to time may be taken to the Director in Charge of the tournament, and no further.

Monitoring

At this and future North American Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and will be available for later official inspection and review. By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table. This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Electronic Device Policy

The electronic device policy is revised as follows: 1. For all NABC+ rated events at NABCs: Electronic devices, including but not limited to, phones, cameras, PDAs, and others capable of sending or receiving electronic communication are excluded from the playing areas during any session of play. This does not apply to health-related equipment. 2. For all events at an NABC other than a NABC+ rated event: Except for health‑related equipment, or by permission of the Director‑in‑Charge of the tournament, cell phones, audible pagers or similar equipment may not be operated or operable in any manner in the playing area during a session of play. Any such equipment must not be visible during the session. Sponsoring organizations of other ACBL‑sanctioned events are encouraged to adopt a similar policy. 3. These restrictions in numbers 1 and 2 above apply to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders (except those designated by ACBL) and kibitzers and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play. 4. A violation of any of the restrictions in numbers 1 and 2 above will result in a disciplinary penalty of one full board (12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS The endplay

Would you buy a used car from a salesman who told you that your brakes would work 50% of the time? Probably not. Finesse-aholics overlook the 50% odds that are ours when we attempt a finesse. Whenever you find yourself in a contract that depends on a finesse, consider whether you can execute a strip and throw-in instead… that is unless you are able to peek to see who has the missing queen on this deal. Consider the following deal. You are in 6♠ on the lead of the ♥K from West.

Think of the four suits as follows: The trump suit – draw as many as necessary. The “don’t touch”suit – this is the one you do not wish to touch but wish the opponents to lead for you. You must identify this suit at the beginning of the play so that you don’t play it yourself. The “strip” suit – play this side suit in its entirety, remembering to ruff, if necessary, any extra cards in either hand in the other hand. Remove – or “strip” – all of the cards in this suit. The exit suit – this is the suit that you intend to play in order to throw the opponents in.

Bidding commentary: East is strong enough, at least in terms of high-card points, to overcall 1♥, but the suit is so emaciated! As South, respond 1♥ with four hearts and four spades. If partner doesn’t rebid 1♠, the inference is that partner does not have four spades. Note that some players rebid 1NT with a 4-3-3-3 hand

You diagnose that it is the diamond suit that you must not touch yourself. Why? Because the diamond suit depends on a finesse, and you may guess wrong in trying to locate the queen.. So here is your plan: Win the ♥A. Review the situation. No problem drawing trumps, even if one opponent has all three missing spades. No problem eliminating clubs. You have only three in each hand and the top three honors in the suit between the two hands. Now you are set. After you finish playing clubs, probably ending in dummy, simply play the ♥10. West will probably win, but it doesn’t matter if it’s East. Whoever wins will have to play a diamond, solving your problem in that suit, or some other suit, eliminating your problem in diamonds. How? Well, say West wins and continues with a heart. You have no hearts in either hand, so you can ruff in dummy and discard a diamond from your hand – or you can discard a diamond from dummy and ruff in your hand. Either way, you no longer have to worry about who has the ♦Q. Now let’s change the situation. This time the contract is 4♠ with the same lead – the ♥K.

You have a loser in hearts and three potential losers in diamonds. Again, diamonds is the suit you do not want to play yourself. This is mainly because the cards supporting your two diamond honors are so poor. If you play a diamond to the jack and it loses to the ace or king, the chances pattern and do not deny four spades. With 5-5 in the majors, start with 1♠ and bid and rebid hearts if you are strong enough. Defensive commentary: As East, play the ♦K, third hand high when dummy has low cards. Don’t even think of playing the 10! If the king holds, return the 10, the higher of two remaining cards. When you later get in with the ♣K, and assuming you have no diamonds left, shift to a low spade, trying to get partner in to cash those two remaining diamonds. As West, after winning the ♦Q at trick two, if you shift to a low spade and partner wins and returns a spade, you defeat the contract. Nobody in any of my classes has ever done this.

of avoiding two more diamond losers are poor. You need West to have started with both high diamonds or East being down to a singleton honor. Good luck with that plan! The way to solve the problem is to win the ♥A, pull trumps, cash all your clubs, then exit with the ♥10 as you did in the previous deal. 21 Whoever wins will have to play a suit other than diamonds – again, you get a ruff-sluff – or play diamonds for you. Say West wins and leads a low diamond to East’s ace. If he plays back another diamond, you play low from your hand, and West must win the king. Now your queen is good. Some players have trouble diagnosing that there are three diamond losers in the situation described. Lay out the cards at home and give West ♦K 9 6 and East ♦A 10 8 7. If South leads a diamond, West plays low and East takes the queen with the ace. If you later try to win a trick with the ♦ J, West will win and have the ♦9 to cash.

Play commentary: As South, the club finesse is headed into East (who has denied the ♦Q with the play of the king, so hold up in diamonds to deplete East of diamonds in case he has the ♣K. (Murphy’s Law: East will have the ♣K). After the holdup play and the losing club finesse, rise with the ♠K when West shifts to a low spade. Why ? You can’t make the contract if West has the ♠A, so play East for it! When one opponent has the setting trick(s) and you are missing an ace, play the opponent who does not have the setting trick(s) for the ace. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

The value of keeping quiet

On this deal from the quarterfinal round of the Grand National Teams Championship Flight, Steve Robinson of the District 6 team got a valuable hint on how to bid and play the following deal when an opponent made an ill-timed lead-directing double. Robinson held (spots approximate): ♠K 4 ♥A K Q ♦A K 7 ♣A 8 6 5 3 and opened 2♣. Partner Peter Boyd responded 2♦, showing zero or one controls (aces = 2, kings = 1). Robinson rebid 2NT showing a balanced hand in this high-card range, and Boyd tried 3♣, puppet Stayman, asking Robinson if he had a four- or fivecard major. Robinson denied a five-card major with 3♦, and Boyd continued with 3♠, showing four hearts. Robinson was about to bid 3NT when the next player doubled. Concerned that the lead-directing double would help the defense sink 3NT, Robinson risked 4♥ to play the known Moysian fit. Everyone passed. The opening lead was the ♠2, and this is what Robinson saw:

Declarer rose with the ace, cashed the ♣A and played another club. RHO won the trick and played asecond diamond. Robinson won, ruffed a club high (RHO showing out), cashed the ♠Q discarding his remaining diamond, crossed to a trump, ruffed another club high, and played two more rounds of trump. When hearts proved to be 3-3, Robinson claimed 11 tricks. At the other table, 3NT by South failed by two tricks as declarer had no entry to dummy.

This board from the second qualifying session of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs brought up many issues of declarer play and defense. The most common variation was to defend 3NT. Two down would be a bottom, so I think declarer made the right matchpoint decision when he won the ♠A, cashed dummy’s hearts and led a diamond to the jack. It’s pretty difficult, although not impossible, for North to win and underlead his ♣A for the ruff. When he played back a diamond, West had 10 tricks.

On this deal from the second qualifying session of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs, I thought my partner made a nice play, but declarer missed his chance to be a star. He won cheaply, took the club finesse, covered all around, and played the ♣Q and a third club. West won and played a second heart. To make the contract, South must duck, playing for the ♠A and the ♦K to be onside. He can win the next heart and score four diamonds, one spade and two tricks each in clubs and hearts. When declarer took the second heart, and advanced the ♦J, I thought my partner, Eric Leong, did very well to duck, blocking the diamonds. Now declarer could cash the diamonds in dummy and play a spade, but I we took the ♠A, three hearts and two clubs for two down.

Yesterday, this NABC saw the start of the ACBL College Team Championship, a Junior Reception, an I/N Reception, an amazing number of people attending a free lesson by Audrey Grant, high-level competition in the LM Pairs and the GNTs, a couple of full rooms at the Sheraton, and the early arrival some Senior KO players. This is a wide range of ages, skill levels and competitive spirit, but with a consistency of passion for a great game. Bridge is alive and well as exemplified by this and the crowds on the Convention Level of the Royal York and the Concourse Level of the Sheraton. Both hotels did an admirable job yesterday. There will always by glitches, but they seemed minimal. The PATH was pretty boring, but Eton Center was hopping. Those electronic devices sure use a lot of batteries, and anyplace other than a regular drug store sure charges a lot. Thank you, Drug Mart, for NOT charging $4 per AA battery! Elsewhere in the city, there were still Horn Lake-like temperatures, the line at the CN Tower elevators was longer than the one at the LM Pairs yesterday, and the ACBL shuttles continued to be a hit, especially when it started raining right at game time last night. The Insider would like to apologize for the street closing during the Supreme Commander’s motorcade yesterday. The limo, the decoy limos, and the motorcycle cops are all pretty much standard by now, but the four Mounties and the helicopter seemed extravagant even by S.C. standards. The Boss Baum farewell tour now has a name: the Bye, Bye Baum Bridge Bonanza. He is making plans to take 10% of the masterpoints out of the vault, traveling to various bridge hotbeds and giving triple points to any pair that can beat him and the BBO bot. AMG wandered down to the Royal York yesterday to get re-acquainted with the national event players.

It looks obvious to pitch another spade, but declarer is known to have spade length plus hearts and two clubs, so he can’t have diamond length. At the table, I pitched a diamond. Now declarer crossed to the ♦A, ruffed the last club and exited with a diamond. We could cash two diamonds, but I no longer had the fourth diamond to play to promote my partner’s trump 10. If you don’t play puppet Stayman on this deal from the second qualifying session of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs, you (East) are likely to play 3NT on a diamond lead after showing four spades. If you had a first-round heart control you might win the ♦Q and take an early spade finesse, hoping the defenders couldn’t pick off your doubleton honors. As it is, the contract appears to hinge on the spade suit. You do have a choice: given that if the spade finesse loses the defenders rate to have eight total tricks (five diamonds, two hearts and a spade), should you cash one spade before running the clubs? This does limit the undertricks, but it signposts the defense. Then again, the defenders might work that out anyway. At our table, I casually took one spade before running clubs, and North (as at so many others) threw a spade anyway, so we ended up with 11 tricks.

Each player is required to have a convention card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. Both cards of a partnership must be identical and include the first and last names of each member of the partnership. If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director. If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circ*mstances. The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Sanders was introduced to bridge as a caddy at the 2007 Spring NABC in St. Louis. That same summer, he caddied at the Nashville NABC, where he met Ladyzhensky, who was also caddying. But it wasn’t until about a year and a half ago that he actually started playing the game. Before then, baseball (he pitched for four years), football, bowling and participating in National Honor Society activities consumed most of his extracurricular time. Sanders will be entering Arkansas State University in the fall and plans to study international business. “School comes easy,” he says. “It’s bridge that comes hard.” As many before him have promised, “I’m going to put school first, but I’ll play as much bridge as I can.” While he can envision playing bridge full time someday, “I hope I get out of school before I make that decision.” The King (or Queen) of Bridge title recognizes a high school senior’s overall participation in the local bridge community in addition to the accumulation of masterpoints. Sanders helps out at local tournaments. He also makes himself available to duplicate newcomers for advice or consolation, and plans, perhaps, to teach “when I learn a little bit more myself.”

Simpson elected ABTA president

Brenda Simpson of Spokane WA has been elected president of the American Bridge Teachers Association. Simpson will begin her two-year team, taking over for current ABTA President Joyce Penn, on Oct. 1. The new president-elect of the ABTA is Chuck Hodel of Chico CA. Simpson teaches bridge five days a week in Spokane and directs two games. She also teaches and directs on cruise lines at least four times a year. She was recording secretary of the ABTA for eight years, vice president for two years and will become the president’s advisor for two years when her term as president ends. In a departure from the ABTA’s usual scheduling, the next conference of the organization is scheduled for the 2012 Spring NABC in Memphis. The ABTA normally meets at the Summer NABC. In observance of the ACBL’s 75th anniversary next year, the ABTA will provide free Teacher Accreditation Program (TAP) classes in Memphis to anyone who joins the ABTA between now and the 2012 Spring NABC next March. The course usually costs $125. This is a one-time offer. More information is available at www. teachbridge.com. The Restaurant Guide By Sally Rewbotham, Tournament Chair

There are a great many jobs being done for the Toronto NABC by folks who work quietly behind the scenes. One of those jobs is the Schedule and Restaurant Guide which players receive for free when they register. This year, Josée Hammill and Jill Thompson accepted the challenge to put the guide together. Some of their comments about the task are as follows: “We must admit that we did not walk into this job with a lot of expectations. Ina Demme approached us about performing this task during the 2010 regional in Toronto, and we were both glad to ‘give back.’ The beauty was that this was our project, and we had free rein to handle it as we wished. Nothing seemed overly difficult. With the help of the Internet, it was easy to get a list of nearby restaurants. We were impressed by the overwhelmingly positive responses to our requests. It was a lot of fun getting to know the managers of many of Toronto’s restaurants. We feel that we have established a strong business relationship with many of them. continued on page 9

Toronto 2011—A look back For the sixth time in ACBL history, the Summer NABC comes to Toronto. It is 10 years almost to the day that this gracious city last hosted an NABC. Toronto 2001 took over ninth place in the alltime top NABC attendance records with a grand total of 16,079.5 tables in play. Pre-tourney publicity promised plenty to do — museums, art galleries, theater, outdoor activities, fine dining and lively nightlife — and Toronto delivered in spades. Eight all-time greats were inducted into the ACBL Hall of Fame at the annual banquet on July 19, 2001. Eric Murray and Sami Kehela became the first Canadian members when they were presented as the winners of the von Zedtwitz Award for outstanding contributions to bridge. Alan Truscott became a member by winning the Blackwood Award. Also inducted were Lew Stansby and Richard Freeman. Three deceased persons were added to the Hall — Peter Leventritt, Bobby Nail and Sally Young. Paul Soloway was presented with the Sidney Lazard Jr. Sportsmanship Memorial Trophy by Sidney Lazard Sr. And native Canadian Ralph Cohen was honored by the Goodwill Committee for his contributions over many years to the ACBL, to the World Bridge Federation and to bridge in general. The 5th World Computer Bridge Championship was held in 2001, with competitors from France (Wbridge5), Germany (Q-Plus), Great Britain (Blue Chip Bridge), Japan (Micro Bridge), the Netherlands (Jack) and the United States (Bridge Baron). In the 64-board final, Jack beat Micro Bridge 136-84. Exhibition matches teaming up Jack and Micro Bridge saw the techno duo go down in defeat to a team of international stars — Jacek Pszczola, Piotr Gawrys, Sam Lev, Pinhas Romik — by a margin of 18 IMPs. Another team of star players — Lisa and David Berkowitz, Marty Fleisher and JoAnna Stansby — defeated the computers by 8 IMPs. As of the second Friday of the tournament, Zeke Jabbour had played in three events, and he won all three. He was a member of the team that won the NABC Senior Swiss Teams. He also won a Swiss Teams with his wife Sharon and a Flight A Knockout. He said he thought about playing Saturday, but changed his mind: “I might not win.” Getting to the heart of the matter, Toronto 2001 was first and foremost about bridge. Grand defense in the Morehead GNT Championship flight The team captained by Jill Meyers squared up against the team captained by Rose Meltzer in the first Grand National Teams Championship Flight final in 2001. The Meyers team rallied from 27 IMPs down in the fourth quarter to win the event. Meyers, of Santa Monica CA, was playing with Ed Davis, Seal Beach CA; Mitch Dunitz, Sherman Oaks CA, and Iftikhar Baqai, Irvine CA. CBF Hall of Fame Induction

The Canadian Bridge Federation Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held Monday, July 25, at 5 p.m. in the Royal York Hotel in the Tudor Room 7 & 8 (Mezzanine level). The 2011 inductees are Ralph Cohen, Doug Drew, Diana Gordon, Eric Kokish and George Mittelman.
