Inventor Robert Wernikoff, 67 THE BOSTON GLOBE BOSTON -Robert E. Wernikoff, inventor of the first practical digital fax system for use over phone lines, died Wednesday in his home in Newton, Mass. He was 67. The technology for fax machines was born in 1842, when Scottish physicist Alexander Bain produced a primitive instrument that used synchronized electric pendulums to transmit crude images over an electric wire. Before the digitization of information, analog fax machines relied on the clarity of telephone lines, and it took about six minutes to send one page, which was often muddy.

"It was clear what was needed was digital compression. Luckily, my research at MIT and that of my colleagues had laid a good basis for attacking this problem," Mr. Wernikoff said in an interview in the September 1982 issue of Infosystems magazine, which dubbed him the inventor of the first practical digital fax. Mr. Wernikoff founded Electronic Image Systems where he and his colleagues built a prototype digital fax unit.

"By 1969, we had the first commercial digital fax system, called Telikon, for operation over the dial network," he said. The patents for the machine. were bought by AddressographMultigraph which later sold them to Xerox. Born in Zurich, Mr. Wernikoff spent his childhood in Italy.

Before World War II, his family fled Italy's fascist government and immigrated to Havana and eventually Jacksonville, Fla. Mr. Wernikoff also developed non-invasive imaging devices with practical applications in medicine: He was vice president of the Brattle Instrument Corp. in Cam: bridge, from 1974 to 1981.
