  • Songs like Sleater-Kinney's "Can I Go On" and Phoebe Bridgers' "Motion Sickness" reflect Lucy's emotional journey beautifully.

AM I OK? is now streaming on Max after premiering at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival with standout performances, a relatable script, and an interesting soundtrack. It was one of two Dakota Johnson movies that premiered at the festival, with Cooper Raiff’s Cha Cha Real Smooth also making its debut. AM I OK? was the directorial debut of comedian-actresses Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne, who have been married since 2015. The couple have acted together before in one of Tig Notaro’s best projects, One Mississippi.

AM I OK? tells the story of a young woman named Lucy (Johnson), who realizes that she’s a lesbian in her 30s. It’s an unconventional LGBTQ+ coming-of-age movie due to Lucy’s age and experience as someone who comes out later in life. Lucy herself is somewhat embarrassed by not having figured out her sexuality earlier, and AM I OK? teaches important lessons about self-acceptance, reminding viewers that everyone’s on their own unique journeys. During Lucy’s journey, a mixture of songs play, most of which could be classified as indie across different subgenres.

When Every Song On The Am I OK? Soundtrack Plays In The Movie

AM I OK? Features A Diverse Soundtrack

“Can I Go On” by Sleater-Kinney - AM I OK? has an interesting opening sequence, featuring different pictures of young people partying and having fun. Yet, none of the people in the pictures are actually in the film. The sequence is set to Sleater-Kinney’s “Can I Go On,” which is upbeat but has sad lyrics about not knowing whether the singer wants to “go on.” It’s a good introduction to Lucy’s potential mental state before viewers even meet her.

“Can’t Do Much” by Waxahatchee - The indie folk/country song by Waxahatchee is the first of many that plays in the background of a scene. Most songs on the AM I OK? soundtrack are played relatively softly against the characters’ dialogue, making viewers open their Shazam app to find out just what song it is. “Can’t Do Much” plays as Lucy, her best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), and Jane’s boyfriend Danny (Jermaine Fowler) meet for lunch at a cozy diner.

“Easy To Love” by Ivan & Alyosha - Following lunch, Lucy hangs out with her friend Ben (Whitmer Thomas), whom Jane and Danny want her to hook up with. When Ben tries to kiss Lucy, she dodges his attempt. He accuses her of leading her on by playing romantic songs like Ivan & Alyosha’s “Easy To Love,” but Lucy said she just liked it because of the “sadness.”

“Echo Arms” by Mr Twin Sister - Later on in the film, the best friends go to the bar so Jane can tell Lucy she’s taking a promotion that will bring her back to her native London. Lucy tries to be as happy and energetic as the Mr Twin Sister song playing, but she struggles with the news.

“Motion Sickness” by Phoebe Bridgers - The song “Motion Sickness” by Phoebe Bridgers is much more indicative of Lucy’s mood as she drunkenly sobs in the bar bathroom with Jane trying to comfort her. Though it plays quietly, it will be immediately noticeable for Bridgers fans.

10 Saddest Songs Of 2020 That We Couldn't Stop Listening To

2020 gave us many binge-worthy songs. The universality of sad music by icons like Billie Eilish, Mac Miller, and Phoebe Bridgers can be cathartic.

“Turn Back The Time” by Andrew Kingslow & James Knight - With Jane’s help, Lucy manages to get back to their booth at the bar and enjoys the rest of their evening with Danny. Once again, the music returns to upbeat with “Turn Back The Time.” Lucy gets even more drunk, and when Jane confesses she once kissed a girl in high school, it makes Lucy think about her own feelings for women in AM I OK?

“Medicine” by Dayglow - Lucy finds herself at a bar with Jane again, but this time they are accompanied by Jane’s somewhat obnoxious friend and coworker, Kat (Molly Gordon). “Medicine” by Dayglow is a fun alternative pop song, but Lucy doesn’t have a good time because of Kat and who Jane becomes around her.

“When U Go - MoBlack Remix” by Girls Of The Internet & MoBlack - After Lucy realizes she’s a lesbian, she acknowledges her feelings for her own coworker, Britt (Kiersey Clemons), who is flirty with her. When thang out after work for the first time, with Britt cooking for Lucy, “When U Go - MoBlack Remix” plays.

“Cola - lo fi lounge” by Arlo Parks - Britt changes the music to “Cola - lo fi lounge” by Arlo Parks, a more chill song, to set the mood. Britt and Lucy talk about sexuality being a spectrum and they both share that they’ve never kissed a girl before but are open to it.

“Heart To Break” by Kim Petras - “Heart To Break” by Kim Petras is a dramatic mood shift from the intimate “Cola,” as it plays at a lesbian bar Lucy and Jane go to. Jane was insistent on Lucy finding her “community” and putting herself out there, but it’s an unfortunately awkward experience for her.

“Black Dog” by Arlo Parks - Parks is featured again on the AM I OK? soundtrack when Britt hosts a “try-on party” for Lucy that consists of Lucy trying on her clothes. The use of another Parks song makes sense, as Britt is the one controlling the music. This allows viewers to get to know more about Britt without using dialogue.

“Etc Etc” by ROE - Lucy becomes pretty uncomfortable with the “try-on” aspect of their “party” pretty quickly, and they decide to smoke weed, drink, and talk instead. As “Etc Etc” by ROE plays, they get to know each other on a deeper level. This leads to them hooking up for the first and last time in AM I OK?

“Apocalypse” by Cigarettes After Sex - While Lucy is just starting to figure out her love life, Jane’s is falling apart. Lucy and Jane had previously gotten into a big fight, leaving Jane to celebrate her birthday and promotion alone with Danny. There isn’t much to celebrate, as Danny tells Jane he can’t go to London with her. With Jane’s two most important relationships crumbling, the title of Cigarettes After Sex’s “Apocalypse” is quite fitting for this AM I OK? scene.

“True Love Will Find You In The End” by Priscilla Ahn - In Ben's second and last scene, he and Lucy meet up, and she comes out to him. After they part ways, AM I OK? has a montage set to “True Love Will Find You In The End” by Priscilla Ahn, during which Lucy sets up a profile on a dating app, goes on her first dates with multiple women, and starts painting again.

“You Ain’t Alone” by Alabama Shakes - This prophetic song plays as Lucy and Jane get lunch together at their spot for the first time since their big fight. The lyrics of this Alabama Shakes song include “You ain't alone / Just let me be your ticket home,” which turns out to be foreshadowing in AM I OK?

“Tarzan Boy” by Baltimora - After a bunch of slow songs, the AM I OK? soundtrack returns to its more upbeat vibe with “Tarzan Boy” by Baltimora. The song plays as Lucy takes Jane to the airport and tells her she’s going to join her to help her get settled. Once again, the lyrics are fitting. Baltimora sings, “You're far away from nothing / It's all right / You won't miss home.”

“Los Ageless” by St. Vincent - The energetic techno end-credits song, “Los Ageless,” comes from the famously sexually fluid artist St. Vincent. Ironically, it’s a song about Los Angeles when Jane and Lucy have just left California behind for London.
